FDM Group, an IT services provider, which offers training and job opportunities for Ex-Forces personnel, has generously sponsored the maps at the 2016 Cumbrian Challenge.
On 14 May more than 150 teams will be clutching their maps as they set forth into the fells above Grasmere in their teams of four after each raising substantial funds for Walking With The Wounded’s programmes supporting vulnerable veterans back into independence through employment.
“Walking with the Wounded’s aim is entirely in line with FDM’s core values and there is a real synergy with our own Ex-Forces Programme (designed to bridge the gap between the services and commercial world),” said Nicola Harrison, FDM’s regional sales manager, who braved the challenge last year and is back for more in 2016.
“Due to the similarity in ethos behind both of our organisations’ programmes, we felt bound to support the Cumbrian Challenge and offered a number of teams to participate in 2015.
“What a fantastically run event – organised to precision, with competitors and volunteers who supported and encouraged us through the blisters, ankle and knee pain, not to mention a superb day out on the fells in stunning surroundings, and a great evening over a few (too many) drinks whilst enjoying the band!
“Our only disappointment was that one of FDM teams took a wrong turn out of the starting blocks – adding an extra 10 minutes to their overall time essentially costing them first place in the Tougher category! However, the experience convinced us that this was an event that FDM should support on an ongoing basis both in terms of teams competing and in providing sponsorship for such a worthwhile cause. We are looking forward to an outstanding 2016 event.”
The event, presented by BAE Systems, Artemis and Vodafone, has attracted a record number of teams entering this year and will see participants tackle one of three routes over the stunning fells around Grasmere.
This year’s challenge has already raised more than £120,000 with donations coming in every day.
