Grand to Grand 2016 Team Member: Colette Slack

Why did I sign up?

I have previously only done a half marathon so this makes me a bit crazy but after watching ‘Run The Sahara’ and meeting some of the amazing MdS 2015 group who starred in it, I was inspired. When I learnt that two of the group were taking part in Grand2Grand and there was a place available I was nervous but very excited. I’m very much looking forward to learning from both Ian and Vick’s experiences.

Why WWTW?

The journey we are about to embark on will at times be painful and uncomfortable but it will be nothing compared with what some of our wounded military go through each day. Not only do I want to raise significant funds for WWTW but I would also like to raise awareness for the amazing work they do. This challenge will be life changing for me and through it I’m hoping I can make a difference to the lives of some very brave and inspirational men and women.

Hows training going?

Training has been going well so far. I’m training 6 days most weeks but only to catch up with the rest of the team! I’ve been running, swimming, walking, doing some yoga and lots of high intensity sessions. I’ve been looking at training events and signed up for T60, one of the T series events which is 60 miles overnight from Oxford to Cirencester. It is through the night and the longest ultra I have done so it will be a real test of strength and endurance. It will be tough but will help me know I can tackle the long stage of G2G (53 miles). I’m also doing Race to the Stones 100k which is a two day event and will be good to test the back to back runs and sleeping in a tent.

I feel like I’m on track even though I still have a way to go. Once I know I can cover 60 miles in one go, I will be concentrating on training with my pack at full weight, running in the highest temperatures available to me and climbing as many big hills and mountains as possible as I see weight, heat and altitude as my biggest challenges of the event. I’m walking some of the Camino de Santiago in July so that will hopefully help with the heat training and I am aiming to gain some altitude in Wales and Yorkshire.

What luxuries will you treat yourself to during the G2G?

Maybe some tasty biltong

What 1 item of food are you taking which is your treat?

Food treat – peanut m&m’s, pork scratchings

What will you be listening to on your iPod?

I will be listening to lots of different music on my iPod, sometimes house music so I can move to the beat and sometimes a song I can have a good old sing along to when times are tough.

Is there anything which you know you will be looking forward to at the end, before even beginning?!

Once G2G is over, I’m looking forward to relaxing by a pool in Las Vegas with a well deserved cocktail in my hand.
