The 70/70 D-Day Tribute

June 8, 2014

Steve McKendrick and the community of Barton under Needwood are hosting a truly unique tribute to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. Teams of cyclists, runners, canoeists, walkers, skate boarders, swimmers and horse riders will each complete a distance of 70 miles to represent the 70 years since Operation Overlord and then rendezvous at the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Each team will carry a Normandy Beach pebble along their route and lay them at the following memorials: the Army and Airborne Forces, the RAF, Royal Navy, WAAF, WRAC, Medical Corps, the Staffordshire Regiment and the Royal Logistics Corp. A pebble will also be laid at the War Widows Rose Garden in recognition of the tremendous sacrifices made by the spouses of those who died in the service of our country. Gratitude Honour and Pride form the basis of this incredible tribute and we are deeply touched to have been nominated as one of the events three charities.
