Walking With the Wounded Everest Base Camp Support Treks 2012

Walking with the Wounded is offering a unique opportunity for supporters of the charity to walk into Everest Base Camp while our Everest team is attempting to climb to the top of the world’s highest mountain during April and May 2012.

The treks will be managed and coordinated by Russell Brice’s team in Nepal at Himalayan Experience. Russell is leading the WWTW attempt (and lead their successful climb on Manaslu, the world’s 8th highest mountain, in October this year) and has been operating Himalayan Experience in Nepal since 1996 (he has been guiding since 1974). Through his excellent logistical network, and his high ethics on safety, the treks are amongst the most professional in Nepal.

To add something special to the treks, each will be accompanied by two Walking with the Wounded team members who will be able to share their own experiences, both in the Armed Forces and during the preparation and training as one of the prospective summiteers with the Walking with the Wounded team. Also, each trek will hopefully meet with the summit team up at Everest Base Camp, although this will depend on their climbing schedule which is determined by the weather.

The treks start in Kathmandu where trekkers will be able to prepare for the walk, meeting Russell’s team. From there they will fly to the start point in Lukla. The mountain scenery is stunning and the mountain paths are well formed and maintained. Each day’s trek varies from 1 – 5 hours allowing for acclimatization. Each trekker carries a small day pack with the remainder of their equipment being carried by a porter or a yak. Trekkers will stay in teahouses for much of the trip, most of which are owned by Sherpas who are part of Russell’s climbing team, so the welcome at each is very warm. For the nights at Lobuche Base Camp and Everest Base Camp, trekkers will stay in tents which have comfortable foam mattresses, and will have the chance to experience normal expedition life with other expedition members including Walking with the Wounded members.

All those who take part in these treks will be asked to raise sponsorship for Walking with the Wounded. The suggested amount per trekker is £2,000.
