The majority of wounded armed forces men and women are former front line troops, aged 18-25 years old, some already disadvantaged in education or home background. There is emerging evidence that reveals common mental disorders and alcohol misuse are more prevalent in the ex service population, despite popular belief that PTSD is the main issue. The veterans who we support have varying needs from double amputees or burns victim who are trying to rebuild their lives.

Head Start accept referrals from healthcare professionals. On referral we look for an assessment to have been completed and statutory therapies to have been explored. However where the NHS are unable to deliver support to an individual for such reasons as long waiting lists, Head Start will fund private therapy for up to 12 sessions.

Walking With The Wounded’s key role within the process is to guide and navigate the individual, tracking their progress throughout their journey to recovery. We hope this guidance and support will increase clients levels of engagement to complete their therapy. Therefore Head Start team members keep in contact with both the client and their therapist to be informed on levels of engagement. We ask that the therapist completes the WSAS, PCL-C, AUDIT, PHQ-9, and GAD-7 patient recorded outcome measures (PROMs) with the client at the beginning, middle and end of therapy; with scores being returned to Head Start for purposes of continual programme evaluation.

Head Start is still in it’s early stages so currently we have a low volume of clients. However it is envisaged in the forthcoming months that demands to our service will grow. In light of this we would be looking to refer individuals who are unable to engage with statutory services to private therapists like yourself, who can schedule an initial consultation in a timely period.
