Captain Ivan Castro enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1988. Ivan has served in many operations including Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom, and has undertaken deployments all over the world. Ivan sustained life-threatening injuries when
mortar shells landed near him, killing two men in his unit, during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Ivan battled back from his injuries to return to active duty, and is now currently an officer serving on active duty at the Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Since his injury Ivan has participated in more than 24 marathons, and in 2004 he challenged himself to cycle across America. He is greatly looking forward to this new feat: ‘This opportunity has shown that although my sight has been taken from me, there is still life out there to be fully lived and enjoyed. Although some doors have been closed by the nature of my injury, my involvement with this challenge shows that so much can be achieved – all you need is a vision and the will to keep moving forward.’
