This past summer a group of ex British and Irish Lions rugby stars cycled 1,000 kms from the Etihad Stadium in Melbourne to the ANC Stadium in Sydney, between the 2nd and 3rd Lions test matches in Australia. The ex-Lions included rugby legends Roger Uttley OBE, Mike Teague, Peter Winterbottom and Tyrone Howe. They rode alongside ex Wallabies Simon Poidevin, Warwick Waugh and Andrew Heath and a group of some 30 eager supporters.
The cycle ride was the biggest charity event running alongside the Lions tour of Australia and was supported by the Lions and the Australian Rugby Union. The Ride of the Lions raised over £125,000 for Walking With The Wounded and the event organisers are in the midst of recruiting cyclists for this year’s event, the Triple Crown, which will consist of ten teams of 15 cyclists incorporating wounded soldiers and a number of ex British and Irish Lions cycling across the UK via the four home union rugby grounds. Here are the thoughts of one of our greatest ever Lions Roger Uttley…
“I should just add my thanks to you all for your companionship last week. I have been very fortunate in my life to have had some great times through sport. Without a shadow of a doubt the “ROTL2013″ ranks up there with the best. The physical challenge of riding that distance, the organisation to get us there and the “craic” in general, amongst a crowd of guys most of whom were strangers to one another at the start of the journey, was simply brilliant.”
