For me, training for the walk has been done in two ways.. I have been hitting the gym to keep up muscle mass as we will undoubtedly be losing some over the course of 1000 miles and I have been getting out and about to put some miles on the legs, trying to get used to the repetitive nature of the 72 days walking. Training hasn’t been entirely solo as the team meets every 3 weeks or so to get some walking time together and bond as a group.
Our training has been mostly in Norfolk where the WWTW HQ is based, ensuring we can spend some time with the wider WWTW team and of course coordinate filming and kit pick ups! We have also all had the opportunity to take part in the WWTW 2015 Cumbrian Challenge which was a great weekend – good hill training and very social too! We met some of the WWTW beneficiaries which was fantastic and really puts into perspective what the charity does.
Along the way we have been joined by two new team members Kirstie and Andrew, both American wounded veterans who are joining us for the duration of the walk. They are keen as the rest of the team to crack on and keep spirits high throughout the 72 days. As long as we can all understand each other it will make the whole experience more interesting and bring more characters to the party !
When I first had the opportunity to meet some of The Walk of Britain sponsors I was apprehensive – I am not used to corporate events, especially in The City! I found everyone to be totally down to earth and completely on my wave lenth – which is a big ask as I am a Yorkshire man!
I am really looking forward to having the opportunity to chat to the sponsors more over the course of the walk and at events along the way, as they are enabling this wonderful opportunity for us and for the charity.
