Meet the MdS Team 2020 - Jamie Maker

To mark our 10th anniversary, we are taking a group of 32 runners out to the Sahara Desert to take part in the Marathon des Sables.

It is one of the toughest endurance races in the world. Participants will run 156 miles in 7 days. In the run up to the race, we are introducing you to some of the team. Next up we have Jamie Maker:

1.       Why did you sign up to the MdS? 

The experience! It’s one of those challenges I have been aware of for some time, and it was something on my bucket-list. I cannot wait to see the spectacular scenery, be in a place so alien to me and so far out of my comfort zone. 

2.       Why have you chosen to support WWTW? 

I have always been inclined to support military charities with donations. In my younger years, my hope was to join the RAF as a pilot, but as a teen my eyesight began to deteriorate and I needed glasses, so my hopes of being a pilot were dashed but my affinity for the Armed Forces remained, and my support limited to donations. But, the lure of the MdS and the huge support WWTW gets for the event was too good an opportunity to miss, and pushes me to actively support such a great cause. 

3.       How’s your training going – what have you done so far, which milestones have you hit and are you happy with where you are so far?

It’s going well! I have been building up for some ultra-running events, so many miles are being put in. One key milestone was a 100-mile race that I have just completed: the Autumn 100 by Centurion Running. A grueling weekend in the rain, but I finished it and the experience exceeded my expectations. I need to make sure I don’t get carried away and injure myself before April next year! 

4.       What do you see as the biggest challenge?

The heat. I have always struggled in the heat, so this is my main worry. 

5.       What luxuries will you treat yourself to during the MdS?

iPod, iPhone and solar charger. These are a must for me. Listening to music and podcasts on the long days to keep me motivated (and maybe act as a distraction from the suffering!) and taking plenty of photos. I want to capture as many memories as I can.  

6.       What item of food are you taking which is your treat?

Not sure yet. I’m still investigating food options, and while I know chocolate will not last in the heat, peanut M&Ms might…

7.       What will you be listening to help you through the marathon?

There might be a few rock tunes to lift the spirits and keep me going, but more than likely it’ll be lots of podcasts. 

8.       Is there anything that you know you will be looking forward to at the end, before even beginning?

The shared experience of the finish line with everyone. Getting through a tough event and shaking hands with other competitors on the finish line and the sense of accomplishment will be an amazing experience, and I can't wait for that moment.
