Although the Cumbrian Challenge has been postponed until October 3rd due to COVID-19, this has created a fantastic opportunity to potentially raise even more money for the cause at a time when every pound raised carries even more weight. As a result of this, Walking With The Wounded are launching our brand new virtual event – the Cumbrian Challenge At Home!

This is going to be an amazing day of fundraising activity to try and help you reach your fundraising targets in October, and we also aim to bring together the Cumbrian Challenge community in these difficult times. We have a brilliant schedule of interviews which will be broadcast onto Facebook in order to inspire you, including a Q&A with Shaun Franklin and a motivational talk by climber Jake Meyer.

There will also be a prizegiving event in the evening of the 16th in order to award spot prizes to the best companies, teams, and individuals, including best photos, most elevation climbed and most money raised.

On Saturday morning, we will be hosting a briefing via Zoom, which participants are more than welcome to attend. Please register for more details.

How Can I Take Part?

Taking part is simple. Challenge yourself to do a fundraising activity that replicates the Cumbrian Challenge on or before 16th May (you can do this in stages), ask your friends, family and colleagues to donate to your fundraising page on, and challenge them to take part themselves! All donations made contribute towards your overall fundraising. Not taking part in the Cumbrian Challenge but still want to fundraise? Simply set up a fundraiser on JustGiving, Virgin Money Giving or Facebook.

If you want to match the exact distance or height of your route, you can find the statistics on here.

It’s a brilliant way to boost your team morale, keep your training momentum going and, most importantly, help support our beneficiaries through this uncertain period.

Here are some ideas to get you going:

  • Go the distance – go for a solo walk (within government guidelines) that matches the total length of your chosen route, or divide this up between your team as a relay. For an extra challenge, take a weighted backpack with you.
  • Climb every mountain – climb your stairs at home for a fixed amount of time, or until you reach the same elevation as your chosen route. It may not have the same views, but you’ll certainly feel it in your calves!
  • Carry on camping – take the virtual challenge one step further by camping in your garden or living room the night before.
  • Be creative – if you can think of anything else you can do on or before 16th May that would help boost your fundraising, then give it a go; the more creative the better!

Top Tips

  • Rally your troops – use the virtual challenge to check in on your teammates and see how they are doing in these difficult times.
  • Share your activity on social – tag your posts and pictures with #CumbrianChallengeAtHome to share what you’re doing with your friends, family and colleagues. We’ll share our favorites!
  • Track your activities - use your fundraising page to share your training updates with the new activity tracking feature which integrates with Strava and FitBit.
  • Encourage people to donate – share the link to your fundraising page, or download and print our sweepstake. The money raised will go directly to veterans who are deeply affected by this period of social isolation.
  • Join the Facebook Group – connect with other Cumbrian Challenge participants and inspire each other by sharing your fundraising activities on the Cumbrian Challenge Community Group.
  • Join us on Strava - take part in our leaderboards and track your training through our brand new Strava club.
  • Have fun!

Thank you in advance for continuing to support Walking With The Wounded through this uncertain period. Every donation on your fundraising page is processed and sent to us within a few days, meaning we will receive your money now, at a time when it is most needed in order to support those veterans who have been affected by the lockdown.

Remember - be safe and always stay within the latest government guidelines.
