In 2017, Duncan Slater became the first double leg amputee to take the Marathon des Sables. As we mark our 10th Year Anniversary, Duncan is back to mark 10 years since his amputations. In our latest Marathon des Sables series, we find out why Duncan is returning to the desert and how he is getting ready for the race.

The Marathon des Sables (MdS) is a grueling race across the Sahara Desert, and it attracts thousands of runners every year. Over the years, WWTW has invited different teams to take part in the event on behalf of the charity and this year we have our biggest team yet! In our latest interview, Josh Hignell shares some thoughts on why he is taking part and how he is preparing for the race:

The majority of people who read this will not be taking part in Walking With The Wounded's annual Walking Home For Christmas campaign. Why? Because although it's free to sign up, it requires a bit more commitment, a bit more organisation and a bit more oomph to line up a few friends, ask for donations and step outside your door when it is wet and wild outside and you have a list of jobs to do before Christmas longer than your legs. We like being comfortable.

Walking With The Wounded (‘WWTW’) CEO, Edward Parker and a team of veterans are getting ready to set off on a 122 mile trek (almost the equivalent of 5 marathons) from the WWTW North East Hub in Gateshead Civic Centre to the North West Hub based in Canada Street, Manchester. This is in aid of Walking Home For Christmas. The campaign supports ex-servicemen and women who are alone this Christmas.

In 2020, WWTW are taking an elite group of 32 ultra-runners to the Sahara Desert to take part in the infamous Marathon des Sables. The team have 7 days to complete 6 marathons. Over the next few months, we will be introducing you to some of the team. In this interview, we hear from Sean Clark.

Myiah Allen, a 7 year old from Perth is walking 1 mile to school every day from the beginning of November through to the end of term in December. She is doing this as part of Walking With The Wounded’s national campaign ‘Walking Home For Christmas’ which raises vital funds for veterans and their families who are at risk this festive season.

As with most major cities in the UK, you do not have to travel far in Manchester to see people rough sleeping. It has always affected me but I have never tackled the issue head on, choosing instead, like most, to put the situation to the back of my mind. Not out of disrespect, but out of awkwardness brought on by the fact I cannot begin to comprehend what that person is going through, a powerlessness to help and a feeling that my face would give away my emotions.

Walking With The Wounded (‘WWTW’) has bolstered its senior management team with the appointment of Jason Rigby as the new Director of Fundraising and Communications. The appointment comes as the charity prepares to mark its 10th anniversary in 2020.

Four years ago, Walking With The Wounded set up a regional hub in Manchester. The aim was to be able to reach more veterans in the North West of the country. I joined the charity following the BBC DIY SOS Big Build of the Manchester Veterans village. Today I celebrate 4 years in the role.
