A recent amendment to the Railways Bill means free travel to and from Remembrance Sunday events will be extended to include one bereaved family member.

Led by Helen Maguire, MP for Espom and Ewell, the change ensures bereaved military family members are able to attend Remembrance Sunday events and pay their respects, without the burden of travel costs.

Since 2024, serving military personnel and veterans have been able to travel to and from Remembrance Sunday events for free, but this will be the first time the offering is extended to bereaved family members. The amendment to the Railways Bill will apply to a widow, widower, or one direct family member of any member of the Armed Forces who has died in their course of service.

The criteria for how bereaved family members can claim the free travel will be released in the coming months.
