Thanks to funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, Walking With The Wounded are hosting a free, six-week programme for families and carers of ex-service personnel suffering with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Led by Head Start clinicians, the programme will offer trauma-informed psychoeducation, tools for navigating complex emotions, practical strategies for supporting treatment, and a confidential space to connect, reflect and rebuild.
The programme aims to provide attendees with the guidance and support needed to assist them in navigating their journey to support their loved ones, ensuring they aren't battling alone.
What is PTSD and how can it affect veterans and those around them?
PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after someone experiences and witnesses a traumatic event. It can fundamentally alter how a person thinks, feels and responds to the world around them.
PTSD is often common amongst veterans and in many cases is linked to their time in the military. PTSD not only affects the individual, but can also affect those closest to them such as family, friends and carers. Those living with PTSD shouldn't have to suffer in silence, but for loved ones, knowing how to best support them can be difficult.
I finally understood what my partner was going through - and how I could help without losing myself.
