Billed as the world's largest annual walking event, the Nijmegen March is a four-day endurance march that takes place during the third week of July each year.
This year, Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) supporter and Armed Forces personnel, Jen, joined 10 colleagues from the Joint Hospital Group South West to take on the challenge and raise money for WWTW. In total, the team walked 183km over four days.
The Nijmegen March began in 1909 as a military training exercise and, over the last century, has evolved into a mass participation event, welcoming both serving personnel and civilians. Today, more than 45,000 participants from over 70 nationalities take part each year, choosing to walk either 30, 40 or 50 kilometres a day across the four-day event.
Speaking about her experience, Jen said: "It was more challenging than many of us expected. We had to maintain a fast pace throughout each day to make the checkpoint deadlines while still allowing time for breaks and rest stops. Some mornings we even started walking at 3:30am, so alongside the blisters and aching muscles, we were also battling complete exhaustion.
"However, the challenges we faced pale in comparison to those who served and who need support. A huge thank you to everyone who donated to our fundraiser. Every donation spurred us on to complete the challenge."
Martin Lynn, WWTW Events Manager, added: "The Nijmegen March is a fantastic challenge with a lot of history, welcoming participants from around the world. A huge thank you to Jen and her team for taking on this challenge in support of Walking With The Wounded and those who served.
"I'm sure the march was tough, but every step taken and every pound raised will help provide life-changing support to veterans and their families across the UK, hopefully that makes the sore feet, and aching limbs feel a little bit lighter. Thank you."
