Our June-long Longest Day campaign returned with a bang this year. Supporters in the UK and further afield joined our Longest Day ambassador, veteran and Invictus athlete David Moncrieff, in striving to achieve their personal best and become a better version of themselves, all while raising vital funds to support our work with veterans.
Intrepid supporters took to bikes, roads, mountains, pools, golf courses and more as they undertook a variety of challenges including 12-hour spin cycles, 400-mile motorbike rides, 72-hole golf sessions and cycling through the Alps, to name but a few. Each participant put themselves to the test, whether mentally, physically - or both - by striving to go further and aim higher in honour of those who served.
Longest Day ambassador, David Moncrieff, trained in the pool during the month and managed to shave over 1 second off his previous personal best set at the Invictus Games.
Speaking on his reasons for participating in the Longest Day campaign one fundraiser, Dean Browning, who completed the famous 110-mile Marmotte cycling challenge said: “We all get lost at times and need to get ourselves back on track, and sometimes people need support from charities like Walking With The Wounded to do that. The work that this charity does is extremely important and is a cause close to my heart, so I’ll do anything I can to help them continue supporting veterans. This challenge isn’t about me; it’s about helping others.”
The Longest Day fundraisers have so far raised £16,100 during the campaign, with donations still coming in and further income expected from Gift Aid.
The funds raised will assist WWTW’s support care coordination, employment and mental health programmes, ensuring veterans and their families are provided with the support they need to get back on their feet and find their purpose once again.
