On 16 July, Aly and Tim, two dedicated Walking With The Wounded supporters and veterans, embarked on the legendary Vierdaagse, a four-day marching event in the Netherlands.
Known as the International Four Day Marches, this event is the largest of its kind in the world and takes place annually in Nijmegen.
Both Aly and Tim have deep-rooted connections to the Armed Forces, having proudly served in the British Army. Additionally, Aly’s connection to the event is personal; her father served in the Dutch Army and would have witnessed many Vierdaagse events throughout his life.
The Vierdaagse, which began in 1909 as a military event, now welcomes civilian participants from all over the world. The challenge involves walking 30km, 40km, or 50km each day, tailored to participants' age and physical capabilities. Those who complete the march receive a royally approved medal.
Aly shared her thoughts on the challenge, saying, “There are many reasons for us competing in this four-day event. I am personally connected to Nijmegen through my dad, a former Dutch army soldier who grew up there and witnessed many of these events. As former members of the British Army, both Tim and I decided to take on the challenge while raising money for a very worthwhile charity.”
